Iron Giant Percussion

Iron Giant Percussion

The members of Iron Giant (Brett Huffman, Seth Noble, Sam Herman, Justin Wallace) first collaborated on David Skidmore's "Ritual Music" during the fall of 2010 for Seth's Young Performing Artist Program recital. They again performed the same work in the Spring of 2011 for the Sanspointe Dance Company in Birmingham. As they prepared for both of these performances, talk of forming their own percussion quartet became more frequent, with the ultimate goal of performing an entire concert on their own. They have since presented two full-length concerts at UAB-their debut performance in January 2012, and a subsequent concert in August of 2012. They have named their group "Iron Giant" as a reference to the city of Birmingham and its unofficial representative, Vulcan.

As a result of their effort, they have received the honor of a commissioned concert by the Birmingham Art Music Alliance (BAMA) to be presented on April 20, 2013 at UAB. Member composers were invited to submit scores for the group to perform, of which Iron Giant then decided which pieces will be premiered. Recently, Iron Giant was the winner of the 2013 ClefWorks competition in Montgomery. After submitting a recording for review, they were chosen by SO Percussion to perform along with them on February 8 and 9, 2013.

Iron Giant Percussion's Cast of Characters:

Sam Herman is a senior Music Technology major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has performed with the UAB Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Wind Symphony, Jazz Combos, Opera, Choir, Marching Band and Blazer Band. He has done work with internationally recognized drum circle facilitator John Scalici, worked as percussion accompanist at the South East Regional Ballet Association, and performed with Sanspointe Dance Company. He has taught private and group lessons at Birmingham Percussion Center and School of Music as well as the non-profit Scrollworks. Sam will graduate from UAB in May of 2012.

Brett Huffman is from Huntsville, AL and is currently a working musician in Birmingham. He has recently graduated this Fall from UAB with a BA in Music. While at UAB, he was a percussionist in the UAB Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Blazer Pep Band, and Marching Band.

Seth Noble graduated from the University of Alabama Birmingham in December of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music.  A native of Mobile, Alabama, Seth has returned to the Birmingham area to work as a freelance musician; most recently working with Briarwood Christian School's production of The King and I and Sanspointe Dance Company's Dance, Art & Music.  While studying at UAB, Seth performed with various ensembles including the UAB Wind Symphony, percussion ensemble, and opera pit orchestra, and completed a solo recital in November of 2010 as part of the UAB Young Performing Artists' Program.  He has also been a selected performer for the AMTA and MTNA music educators' conferences.  In his free time, Seth enjoys propagating the American folk tradition with his guitar, bass, and banjo, as well as not being questioned by store owners when he walks around hitting various objects with sticks.

Justin Wallace, native to Birmingham, AL, recently graduated from UAB with a Bachelor's in Music Technology and a specialization in percussion, where he was a member of the Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, and Computer Music Ensemble. Justin enjoys collaboration with dancers and began working with Sanspointe Modern Dance Company in 2009 as a company artist before becoming the company's music director in 2011. He accompanied Composition and Modern dance classes at the 2011 South Eastern Regional Ballet Association. He has studied West African drumming with John Scalici and has helped facilitate drum circles and has also performed with Scalici's Juka Tribe. Justin plays the vibraphone in the post-rock/nu-jazz band Fighting Meeces. Aside from percussion, he has a love for the Anglo concertina and is a "peripatetic proselytizer" for the instrument and Bob Tedrow's concertinas. "Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals! Praise Him with vibraphone. Let everything that has breath, concertinas included, praise the LORD (Jesus Christ)." Psalm 150:5-6 Justin Michael translation.
